Fulfilling Your Heart’s Deepest Desires

Getting in touch with what you really want.

It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing. It doesn’t interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dream, for the adventure of being alive...

What does your heart long for?

A few years ago, I got the message from one of my guides, What makes your heart happy? I wrote down a list for myself exploring what made my heart happy, but through the busyness and chaotic rumblings of my life at that time, I didn’t focus very much on fulfilling what was on that list.

There was a part of me that was a little reluctant, perhaps, to focus on happy heart thoughts in this world that so prizes the intellect. Looking back, I didn’t take the answers I had written down very seriously. I didn’t act on what my heart told me. And so I missed out on one of the true joys of life: fulfilling my heart’s desires and having a contented heart.

Many lessons later, I now understand how profoundly impactful and essential that question is, as our heart of hearts is who we truly are—the glue that holds all the nuanced parts of us together—and holds the map for our own happiness journeys.

We are not the mind, the emotions, or the body; we are more. Our heart of hearts is where we can find the truth of who we are, on a core-level. Spending time focusing on the heart can be very healing in meditation, and it can also help us to integrate the various parts of ourselves into a harmonious whole. It is the gateway to our true selves and experiencing deep fulfillment.

When I really listen to my heart and ask what it desires, the answer sometimes surprises me. And as the author and psycich teacher Sonia Choquette advises—when the answer surprises you, that’s a good indication that it’s true, and directly from your intuition.

So, my friend, now the question is: Are you listening to your heart?

And perhaps more importantly, are you taking steps to honor what your heart says?

Today, for a fun exercise, I encourage you to spend 10-15 minutes in meditation, honoring what makes your heart happy. I’ve included step-by-step instructions to get in touch with your heart below.

Meditation to get in touch with what your heart longs for:

  • Relax the body, sit in a comfortable position in a quiet, private place

  • Breathe deeply and gently slow your breathing down

  • Shift your focus to your heart space

  • Sit in stillness for several breaths, imagining you are breathing in and out of your heart (this also can regulate the nervous system and bring you back to center)

  • Notice if any thoughts, emotions, sensations come up—that’s normal and natural, let them come and let them go—and then keep bringing your attention back to your heart

  • Ask your heart, What do you long for? What do you desire? keep an open and neutral mind and in the stillness, listen for the answer. Get curious what it might say.

  • Keep breathing and trust that the answer will come. Silence can be your friend.

  • When your heart speaks, have a dialogue about what you can do to honor this desire

  • When ready and your heart feels satisfied and heard, write down what your heart longs to do and make a plan to take steps to honor your heart’s wisdom

Don’t just listen. Honor and act on it.

Remember: The most important part isn’t only listening to your heart—it’s honoring what your heart says and doing something about it. Take a small step every week, every few days—whatever feels doable for you—to begin this process of really honoring your heart’s longings.

Some resistance from your mind may come up—that’s natural. You’re changing things up, and your mind may not always take kindly to change, as it wants to protect you and to keep things as they have been.

If you are dedicated to honoring your heart’s desires, you will slowly but surely enter into a world of feeling so much more fulfilled, vibrant, and at peace on a daily basis.

What fulfills you—what lights you up—matters. What your heart longs for matters. Listen to it. And act on it. There is no better time to make your heart happy than now.
